The bark is reddish / brown and often peeling
Quite often there will be random suckers growing on the main trunk

Common yew can reach heights of up to 20m and is often found in church grounds and graveyards
The male flowers are present in March and release vast amounts of pollen into the air

The bole of the tree often has exposed roots and the buttress is clearly visible
The leaves are straight, small needles with a pointed tip. They are dark green in older growth
