EXETER TREES

Become a Patron!
Welcome to Exeter Trees - a project dedicated to the beauty of Exeter and it's fantastic trees. My name is Terrence Pickles and my goal is to help the good people of Exeter to get the best from our green spaces and trees. I have dedicated my spare time to this project and hope that it proves useful for everybody.

Exeter is the capital of Devon (UK) and offers over 250 acres of public open space. Within the many parks, playing fields and green spaces there are millions of trees of all shapes and sizes. They offer us clean air, shelter, peace, beauty, food and much more. Each one will have it's own story to tell whether they are young or old. I hope to share their stories with the rest of Exeter.

l have split the project into several smaller projects and they are as follows:
  • Help keep Exeter a Green City - raising funds to buy land for new green spaces and trees. If you would like to help with this great project please click here to make a donation.
  • Educational videos - Short video clips of the trees within Exeter and the green spaces. Please click here to see the channel I have created on YouTube.
  • Educational photos - Photos of the trees within Exeter and other wildlife. Please click here to see the albums and collections I have on Flickr.
  • Social Media updates - I frequently update news and stories across social media for all to see how great Exeter and it's trees are. Please check out my social media links at the bottom of the page. I update Instagram daily.
  • Exeter Council - I am frequently in contact with the Exeter Council and their related parties to help share their knowledge for the rest of Exeter to enjoy. Together we can help make Exeter an even greener city.
  • Tree Mapping - An ongoing project to map and document the trees in Exeter. I have teamed up with Curio XYZ who are a great team of people and made this possible. Their app is available on Apple and Android and their website can be found here.
  • Local Groups - I am often in contact with local groups or getting involved with activities such as a litter picking.
  • Tree Trails - I am planning on running several tree trails across Exeter. As soon as I have completed my research on Deciduous trees I should be in a good position to start these trails. I will likely be using an app called TICL for the tree trails.
Whether you live in the city centre or the outskirts a tree or shrub will be close by. The infamous 'Conker' trees scattered across Exeter are actually Horse Chestnut trees and they aren't actually a native species of the UK. Native or not, they are beautiful trees. This is just a small example of what this project is all about - to share the knowledge of our trees and green spaces for all to enjoy.

We even have two of our own trees which goes to show how green a city Exeter is. They are the Exeter Elm and the Lucombe Oak. Both of which can be found on the grounds of the Exeter Cathedral. They are small specimens but certainly worth a look. The next time you are walking up the High street take a closer at the look at the trees - you may be surprised. For instance, the Maple tree outside Boots has a small infection of Mistletoe!

I've always had a great passion for nature and over the years of living in Exeter this has grown further. My interest in trees and green spaces has given me the drive to create this website as well as several other projects. Enjoy!
