The bark is red-brown in colour, turning grey with age.
The needles are arranged in bundles (fascicles) of three and are 8 - 15cm long

The trunk is typically straight and the growth habit when younger is crown broadly conic
The male pollen cones are produced in the tens of thousands and shed pollen around February time

The mature female cones grow at angles in bundles of 3 - 7 and are very rigid
The young female cones are a deep pink colour and are usually at the upper parts of the canopy
