The bark is light brown and slightly fissured

The leaves are very large and heart-shaped with five-lobes around 15–40 cm long

The fruit is a dry egg-shaped capsule around 3–4 centimetres. long. There are many seeds in each capsule
The flowers are very fragant and ​violet-blue in colour
