There are very few of these in Exeter so will hopefully grow well and add some new character to the area. The nearest 'match' for this tree would be the European Hornbeam which we have a fair few across Exeter. There was no tree cage installed during the initial planting of this tree.

The leaves are very pretty and do look a bit like the shape of a Tulip flower, but it is the flowers that give it the common name of Tulip tree. The flowers will help attract and feed a lot of insects and the fruit will provide food for many creatures. Tree cage installed.

]]><![CDATA[Black walnut (​Juglans nigra) - Cowick Barton playing fields. Planted in Autumn 2020]]>Sat, 02 Jan 2021 18:34:38 GMThttps://www.exetertrees.uk/planting-blog/black-walnut-juglans-nigra-cowick-barton-playing-fields-planted-in-autumn-2020Information: This was planted shortly after the Pink Hawthorn and this was also a replacement for the two mature Sycamore trees that were removed. The Black walnut is a non native species and there aren't many of these about so it's a very welcome addition to the area. Although the flowers aren't very showy the fruit is and will provide extra food for birds, squirrels and other small mammals. No tree guard has been setup yet so this young tree is vulnerable from vandals and dogs.

Although it will be a much smaller tree than the Sycamore in size it will still provide a lot of nature value as the flowers are great for insect pollinators. When in flower this part of the fields will be a stunning pink.

They are located in the area next to Nationwide. As these are part of the Section 106 (The 1990 Town & Country Planning Act) the replacements were of the same species.

The few trees that are within this small shopping estate are located by the entrance or the boundaries. This Silver birch was planted around March to April time that I can tell. 
Update: The tree has either failed completly or has bean vandalised beyond repair.

The two old Black locust tree stumps have been ground up to prevent new suckers as well as any potential trip hazard. The vandalised Sweetgum trees from 2018 have been replaced with this lovely Japanese Pagoda tree as well as the Foxglove tree nearby.
